Linguistic Debriefing
“Linguistic validation” or “localization,” as recommended by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the development and use of translated Clinical Outcomes Assessments (COAs).
According to FDA, a properly validated COA translation should go through to the following steps:
- A forward translation, produced by collaboration between two qualified linguists
- A translation of this text back into English (called a “back-translation”)
- Revision of the forward translation, based on inaccuracies identified by the back-translation
- Cognitive debriefing of the forward translation on a target population of subjects
- Final revision of the forward translation, based on subjects’ feedback.
